Transforming reading for 20 years

Transforming reading for 20 years

When a child reads, an entire future changes.

The Gil Nogueira Institute transforms public schools through reading: a proprietary methodology that brings books into the classroom, featuring qualified mediation and merit-based recognition, so that every child comprehends what they read and takes pride in their achievements.

Who gives the name to

Gil Nogueira Institute

Gil Nogueira was a businessman and, above all, someone who lived for others. While writing a book about his life journey, his family discovered stories he had never told: powerful gestures of generosity, support for social projects, and concrete help to those in need.

After his passing in 2000, this legacy could not simply come to an end. The Institute was born in 2006, inspired by Gil's way of seeing people, work, and the future: with ethics, responsibility, and a deep respect for the opportunities that education can offer.

Why reading is our path

Why reading is our path

Why reading is our path

Reading well changes everything: how children learn in every subject, how they position themselves in the world, and how they dream about their own future.

In Brazil, the reading average is still low and many students reach the final grades without understanding simple texts.

The Gil Nogueira Institute chose reading because it is the silent foundation of any other achievement. When children understand what they read, they also understand that they can participate, ask questions, disagree, and create. This is the movement that "Ler é Viver" sparks within public schools.

writing new stories in public schools

In 2026, the Gil Nogueira Institute completes 20 years of work in public schools. Two decades in which Ler é Viver grew, was improved, reached new cities, and showed, in practice, that investing in reading is investing in dignity.

This milestone will be celebrated with a commemorative book, a new visual identity made of books, and a special campaign to expand the project's reach.

Reading is Living

takes books into the classroom

takes books into the classroom

Ler é Viver (Reading is Living) is the project whose methodology was created by the Gil Nogueira Institute to turn reading into a daily practice in public schools. Instead of books kept on shelves, we work with live collections inside the classroom, with mediation, monitoring, and recognition based on merit.

Books that circulate, mission that advances

The Gil Nogueira Institute also acts as a bookseller on the Estante Virtual platform, transforming donations of literature books into opportunities for social impact.

The received books are registered on the platform, and all the money raised from the sales is applied directly to the actions of the 'Ler é Viver' (Reading is Living) project.

More than just generating resources, this initiative reinforces the importance of keeping books in circulation, bringing stories, knowledge, and inspiration to new readers.

We believe that encouraging reading, in all spaces and in different ways, is investing in the development of more conscious citizens and in building a better future.

Thus, in addition to giving books new destinations, we strengthen our mission and expand the reach of our actions.

Who is behind all of this

We are a team that brings together pedagogy, psychology, social management, and communication to transform reading into a habit and self-esteem into the future. On a daily basis, we visit schools, train facilitators, assess reading comprehension, and monitor results with a human touch and technical rigor. Every child matters – and so does every piece of data.

Patricia Nogueira - President and creator of the project

A psychologist and social entrepreneur, Patricia developed, alongside the pedagogical team, an approach that connects a curated collection, reading mediation, and comprehension assessment with merit-based recognition. With 20 years at the Institute, she coordinates training programs, monitors indicators, and ensures that every step is simple, welcoming, and effective for both the school and the student.
